Happy Birthday Cheeky One! And an Indian Beauty | Compassion Child Sponsorship

This is Alexander and today is his 6th birthday.  His expression looks as though he’s wondering what sort of mischief he can get into.
Mischievous little boy in need of a sponsor through Compassion International.Alexander lives with his mother, father and 3 siblings.  His favorite activity is soccer and he’s doing well in kindergarten.

Most adults in Alexander’s community work as subsistence farmers and earn the equivalent of $15 per month.  Alexander’s sponsorship allows him to receive Bible teaching, health screening, health education, school fees, educational materials, handiwork skills training and field trips.  His parents receive child care education and counseling.

If you would be interested in sponsoring Alexander through Compassion International, please send me an e-mail at mismoni.nh@gmail.com.  I will have his packet for about the next three weeks.

This beautiful child is Laxmi and she is eight years old and lives in East India.  She lives with her father, mother and one sibling.  At home she cares for animals and cleans.  Laxmi enjoys reading and playing group games and she is doing well at school.  Her birthday is June 17, 2004.  I love how bright and cheery her photo is!

Brightly dressed Indian girl in need of a sponsor through Compassion International.Half the adults in Laxmi’s area are unemployed.  The average income for those who work is $22 per month.  The community needs improved sanitation, roads, employment opportunities and alcohol abuse prevention programs.  Common health problems in the area include malaria, diarrhea, jaundice and fevers.

Laxmi’s sponsorship allows her to receive Bible teaching, health checkups, vaccinations, outdoor games, hygiene education, picnics, special celebrations, community service opportunities, educational materials and skills development programs.  Laxmi’s parents receive awareness programs on education, HIV/AIDS, hygiene and alcohol abuse prevention.

Her Future Dream of Becoming a Medical Doctor is Possible | Compassion Sponsored Child

This is my ten year old Compassion sponsored child in Ghana with her birthday gifts (two pairs of shoes and birthday treats for $10!).  That gorgeous grin makes me smile every time I see it, but what makes me smile even more is that in this photo she looks as though she has filled out.  In her first photo, Margaret‘s ankles were so skinny they couldn’t hold up her socks.  She looks to be a pretty healthy weight now!

Margaret has been learning to play the keyboard at her project and she dreams of one day becoming a medical doctor to save lives and serve Ghana.  In her letter she tells me:

“She says, learning how to play the keyboard was very difficult at the beginning and nearly quit but she told herself with encouragement of words from the instructor that she can be successful.  Currently, she is among the five project children left in learning how to play the keyboard after starting with 17 project children.  She feels great and that has motivated her that her future dream of becoming a medical doctor is possible.”

I’m so proud of her!

My Scowly Girl | Compassion Sponsored Child

This is Monica, my spirited girl in Ecuador.  As much as I would love to see that this child actually can smile, I adore her fierce scowls. From the moment I first saw her, I knew she was a force to be reckoned with. This tiny six year old wants to go into politics when she grows up. Think she might do well?

From Then to Now | Compassion Child Sponsorship

Nearly fifteen years ago, I chose my first sponsored child.

The old My Child of Compassion photo folder for sponsored childrenI chose her because her last name was Innocent and because she was absolutely adorable in her too-big, fluffy, ruffly dress.

My sponsored child from Haiti in her first Compassion photo fourteen years ago.About my sponsored child's family, home life and schooling.Over the years she wrote letters . . .

The first letter from my Compassion sponsored child in Haiti.. . . and drew pictures.

A drawing of two people holding hands from my five year old Compassion sponsored child in Haiti. Many of them.

All the letters my Compassion sponsored child from Haiti wrote to me over fifteen years. And she grew.

And last week Compassion told me she has graduated from high school, graduated from the Compassion program and most importantly, become a Christian.  Through Compassion’s influence in her life over the last fifteen years, she has received the tools needed to break the cycle of poverty.   Does Compassion work?  I look at this beautiful young lady and know, without a doubt, that it does.
